In response to this suffering, in 1985, Rotary International launched PolioPlus, a multimillion-dollar initiative to immunize all the world’s children against polio. For 20 years, Rotary and its partners – the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention have worked tirelessly to rid the world of the wild poliovirus.
|Not long ago, the world was paralyzed by the fear of polio. More than 125 countries were polio endemic, and thousands of families watched in anguish as the disease killed or crippled 1,000 people a day, most of them children.
Rotarians worldwide have contributed over US$800 million dollars,
and countless volunteer hours. Through the hard work of
Rotary, WHO, CDC, UNICEF and various country governments over 200 billion
immunizations for children have been given towards the dream of a polo-free world. We are 99.8% there with just four countries remaining that are not Polio Free; Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.
The Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation believe strongly in our initiative to Eradicate Polio and awarded Rotary a $350 Million grant. In return, The Gates Challenge is for Rotary to raising $200 Million by June 30, 2012.
The children of the world, our children, need your help. Polio knows no borders. It can spread from an endemic country into polio-free areas. As long as one case of polio remains in the world, no child is safe from this deadly disease. We hope you will consider making a donation to help us “End Polio Now.”
