Oustanding Inbound Group Study Exchange in Our Area

SEVEN REASONS TO GET INVOLVED WITH GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE

Inbound team with us in the Vegas Area 29 March - 5 April 2008

Though we miss having the team in Southern Nevada, it is fun to keep up with their adventures in District 5300 via their blog.

  1. Remarkable People: the 2008 Inbound team from District 9790 in Australia
(a district comprised of clubs from Melbourne and the region to the north as far as Albury)

Team Leader and Rotarian, Mr. Peter Morley
CPA highly interested in golf and Junior Achievement

Ms. Narelle Beer
Officer in Charge, Heidelberg West Police Station

Mr. Lucien Deane-Johns
Dietitian & Diabetes Educator

Ms. Rhonda Day
Landcare Coordinator, Shire of Campaspe

Mr. Tim Forster
Victoria Police Force, Juvenile Crime Specialist

  2. Opportunity to enjoy Fellowship with your Las Vegas Club Mates
  • Tom Krob, Host (with wife Jane)

  • John and Amy Stevens, organizers (John is coordinator on behalf of District 5300 for the Southern Nevada Clubs participating in GSE, Amy is Las Vegas Club GSE Chair and coordinated Vocational Hosting)

  • Matt Rengel coordinated a Vocational Rondtable and a Night on The Town with Rotaractors & Younger Rotarians

  • Russ Swain hosted the welcome party for the team and Southern Nevada Club volunteers, with "catering" help from stalwarts Karen & Tom Whisenhunt

  • Brock & Barbara Frasier hosted the farewell party for the team and Southern Nevada Club volunteers

  3. Opportunity to show off the vibrancy of the Vegas economy on the individualized vocational days

  4. Opportunity to show off our community and a few of the projects our Rotary Clubs have undertaken to improve the community
  • We had a great time at Planet Hollywood's Spice Market Buffet and Stomp Out Loud -- with generous show comps by BASE Entertainment

  • Matt Rengel arranged a tour of the Nevada Cancer Institute and roundtable discussion of the Opportunities and Challenges of Rapid Growth

  • Mike Link of the Las Vegas West Club provided a full day of Cultural Tours, including a visit with Mayor Oscar Goodman (meeting arranged by Councilman Larry Brown of LV Northwest Club) and guided tours of the Liberace Museum and the Atomic Testing Museum.

  • Dennis Ortwein, Vicke Wille, and Dom Addonizio of the LV Northwest Club provided a half-day tour of Rotary Community Service Projects in the area, including a visit to the Del Sol High School Interact Club and NALA.

  • Rachel Diehl, Michael Gordon and Amanda Hurst marshalled the Community Rotaract Club to join the team at many events, and to host a youthful Friday night on the Strip, with Matt Rengel and his wife Dawn of our club as great hosts to boot. Embarq/Sprint hosted the cadre of GSE Team, Rotaractors, and the Rengels in their Skybox for the Wrangler's hockey game -- especially generous since Embarq/Sprint already donated cell phones for use by the team during their entire month in the Distrcit.

  5. Opportunity to help foster international relations by engaging political, business, cultural, and educational leaders in an exchange of experiences.

  6. Opportunity to work with Rotarians from around the District geographically that serve on the Committee.
  • John could not work things out without the huge help of Wenlee Jensen of the LV Northwest Club and the Mike Link of LV West

  • Angela Brooks of the LV Northwest Club coordinated host families

  • Vegas Host families include great folks from other Clubs: Barbara Harff and Ted Gurr of LV West Club; Joe Germain of LV Northwest Club; Wenlee Jensen of LV Northwest Club; Mike Link of the LV West Club (and wife Linda)

  • Jan Carlton of the LV West Club (and wife of our own Pat Carlton) does a fantastic job as Southern Nevada GSE Treasurer for our collection of clubs (of which 10 clubs are expected to provide funds for our efforts). Pat Carlton helped with transportation as well as access to UNLV resources.

  • Mike Link of the Las Vegas West Club provided a full day of Cultural Tours

  • Dennis Ortwein, Vicke Wille, and Dom Addonizio of the LV Northwest Club provided a half-day tour of Rotary Community Service Projects

  • Our LV Rotary Club Mate Jim Tucker's Passkey Systems donated design and printing support through the ever capable hands of Marc Grimaldi, producer of our Wheel each week

  • Joe Germain, President of the LV Northwest Club, drive the team to California (the sad duty) in addition to hosting a team member (with his wife Kay) and helping with transportation in our valley

  • The LV Northwest and North Las Vegas Clubs both hosted the team for their formal presentation. Each of those Clubs also had their "standard business" of excellent community service to discuss, which allowed the Team members to hear the depth of Rotary Service far beyond GSE

  • District Governor Nominee for 2009-2010 Tom Novotny of LV West helped on a variety of fronts

  • District GSE Chair Pam Hayes of Covina, CA Club is working hard to make sure the team enjoys the entire District for their month in our part of the world

  • Nevada State Senator Bob Beers of the LV Northwest Club helpedg us secure a Proclamation of April 3, 2008 as Rotary Foundation Group Study Exchange Day from Governor Jim Gibbons

  • District Governor Charlie Barr will be making the trip to personally welcome the team at the Airport and help in their Orientation to District 5300

  7. Opportunity to add spice and change your life - Make the decision to do something extraordinary with your time and talents.
