Overview

Imagine heading to school in clothes that don't fit. A couple holes in your jeans may be fashionable, but nobody wants holes in their socks -- much less their undergarments! PE class is hard to look forward to when shoes pinch or flop. And then there is the surprising cold of a sunny Vegas winter morning. We may not have snow, but we do have enough cold to require a good jacket.

Now imagine taking a morning off of your crazy holiday schedule to share the joy of giving someone what they need and will cherish.

If you think the Holiday Season has become too commercialized, then participating in Santa Clothes is sure to restore your spirit!

The Santa Clothes program connects an adult volunteer with a child in need for a shopping trip. Each child arrives with a wish list and sizing. The team of child and shopper have an hour to scour the racks at JC Penney before the store opens to the public. Generous support from our sponsors allows each child to buy $133 worth of shoes, jacket(s), and clothes. With Penney's great discounts -- and no sales tax for the charitable endeavor -- these kids get a real wardrobe make over for the winter ahead.

The shopping team is key to stretching the dollars beyond brand names, and to letting these wonderful children know that our community truly cares about them.

Since Christmas of 1996, the Rotary Club of Las Vegas has been reaching out to more children in need each winter. We sincerely appreciate the help of all the people and organizations that help us live the spirit of the season.

Schedule: Thursday December 13th, 2007

  • 7:30 am  Rotary and Interact Volunteer Shoppers arrive at the JC Penney Company PACKAGE PICKUP/SALON ENTRANCE. Sign in is required. Volunteers must be Rotarians, their spouses, or their invited guests. All shoppers need to hear the Orientation.

All volunteers should go to the JC Penney store at the mall location to which they were assigned.

  • 8:30 am  Children arrive in vans. They are quickly paired with a shopper and hit the racks.

  • 9:30 am  Shopping is wrapped up. Children mark their names on their bag and reboard their van.

The group reconvenes at the UNLV Football Practice Field, accessed via the Harmon Campus Entrance off of Swenson. Turn left off of Harmon at the Tennis Complex, then look for lights a short distance to the right, near the Baseball Complex.

Children and volunteers mingle and play sports in activities organized by UNLV athletes.

  • 11:00 am  Volunteers, children, and UNLV athletes all enjoy a pizza party. At the conclusion, the children will receive one more surprise gift as they leave the party to reboard their vans to head home.

Volunteer Instructions

  • Use the hand-held calculator provided to keep track of purchases

  • No sales tax will be charged

  • The $133 budget for each child is firm.
In fairness to each child, each shopper should try to use the full amount, but must not exceed the limit.

  • Sale prices will be applied. Choose items with zeal!

  • No toys or accessories should be purchased.
Each child will receive a toy at the pizza party.

  • Mission is to provide NEEDED clothing.
A pair of shoes and a jacket is a lot better than a big name shoe alone.

  • The budget cannot be supplemented with personal funds.
It is very important that each child have the same benefit on this special day.

  • Be discreet at the register.
We don't want the kids to compare their clothes as a contest.

281 kids in need were helped in 2006
