SUMMARY:Mary Ann Avnet - Rotaplast
DESCRIPTION:Everybody has a “thing” and Mary Ann knew immediately that Rotaplast was her thing. She has now done three missions with Rotaplast. In 2011\, District 5300 sponsored their first Rotaplast mission as District Governor Roger Schulte’s international project. From the moment that she heard about the upcoming mission to Guatemala at District Assembly\, Mary Ann was determined to go with them. For two weeks\, she served as the Medical Records Coordinator while collecting her “Rotary Moments”. \nIn October of 2016\, Mary Ann spent two weeks in Sylhet\, Bangladesh where she was excited to fulfill the role of Recreation Therapist. This is a great job if you like playing with kids! In Sylhet\, they were fortunate enough to take over a vacant room near the ward\, and each day she opened the playroom to patients\, their siblings\, and their parents. But it was such a novelty that the doorway was often crowded with children and adults alike who just wanted to take in the fun happening in that room. It ended up not mattering if they were at the hospital because of Rotaplast. All were welcome in the playroom. By the time the Rotaplast team left Sylhet at the end of two weeks\, the walls were covered with colorful pictures done by everyone who stopped in to draw\, color or use markers. They did not speak the same language\, but there was an abundance of understanding. \nIn May of 2017\, District 5300 sponsored most of the mission that went to Lima\, Peru and because of that\, four local Rotarians\, including Mary Ann\, were fortunate enough to participate as non-medical volunteers Mary Ann was also the Recreation Therapist in Lima but found that it was a much different experience – different but equally wonderful! Mary Ann has been a member of the Las Vegas Rotary Club since 2006. She has served as a member of the Club Board of Directors for a total of 7 years. She was President of the 25 Club in 2007-2008 and served as President of the Club in 2015-2016. Mary Ann was the Team Leader of the Group Study Exchange month long trip to northern Chile in 2012. She chaired the following year’s incoming and outgoing GSE exchange with India\, and she was honored to be the Rotarian of the Year in 2012. Her interests in Rotary have led her to be very involved with TLC and RYLA.\nShe served as Assistant District Governor in 2016-2017.

SUMMARY:Linda Bertuzzi - Polio Plus in India
DESCRIPTION:I have been really blessed to have been involved with Rotary’s Polio Plus program with my travels to the remote villages in India for the last five years to administer the Polio vaccine – just two drops for each child. This program was begun over 35 years ago with a focus on eradicating Polio from the face of the planet and at that time nearly 1\,000 new cases of Polio were being reported daily. We are now under 20 for the entire world\, year-to-date\, and while the work must continue until we have zero for three consecutive years\, this program has gone beyond the Polio vaccines. Thanks to the vision of Rotary Dream Team leaders PDG Elias Thomas of Maine and Rotarian Sanjiv Saran of Delhi\, India\, Rotarians from all over the world now come together as part of the Team to not only immunize the children of India\, but also participate in the building of a water reservoir/retention dam to provide “sweet water” fed by the monsoons for the thousands of villagers. The hands-on work by Rotarians and friends has bridged the barriers of language to provide understanding and respect and provided a safe location for water harvesting\, eliminating the need for the women to travel for hours to get water for their family. With the women now closer to home\, this frees up the children from the confines of caring for their siblings and allows them to attend school. The water also provides a safe drinking supply\, improving health for everyone in the village. My vision for the last few years has been to engage our youth\, and not necessarily Rotarians\, in this program and allow them to share in the experience of Service Above Self. This particular year was the most memorable with five wonderful young men and women working to change the lives of others\, with smiles on their faces and joy in their heart as they worked tirelessly on the dam and immunized the babies. The story now can be told through the eyes of our children to inspire others and continue our work to build a better world.

SUMMARY:John Lee - Mayor of North Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:As an Eagle Scout\, John Lee began his commitment to public service at a young age. His commitment has continued as he has served on various commissions and boards through elected office. \nJohn’s first job was with the Culinary Union as a dishwasher at the Silver Nugget Casino. In 1975\, John began working in the plumbing trade\, and eventually turned his craft into a successful plumbing company. \nIn 1996\, he was elected to the Nevada State Assembly serving three terms. John was known as a champion of bipartisanship for his commitment to common sense solutions to complex problems. He later served on the Nevada Senate for 8 years\, where he served on the committees of Energy\, Infrastructure\, and Transportation; and was the Chairman of Government Affairs. \nIn 2007\, John was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. His determination to live was based on his understanding that every one of his accomplishments started with his decision to try. After months of agonizing treatment\, John successfully won his battle with cancer. To signal the end of his battle\, John completed a 10-day\, 165 mile hike of the Tahoe Rim. \nOn April 2\, 2013\, Lee was elected Mayor of North Las Vegas. His top priorities focus on attracting new businesses to the City\, and the expansion and enhancement of North Las Vegas libraries and parks. One of the Mayor’s most notable accomplishments was finding and recruiting Faraday Future to build a $1 billion electric car plant at the Apex Industrial site in North Las Vegas. Because of Lee’s leadership\, Nevada was selected after a national search. The new plant will employ 4\,500 workers and have an eventual $87 billion impact on the region. \nJohn and his wife Marilyn have been happily married for 42 years\, have seven children and recently celebrated the arrival of their 25th grandchild.
