SUMMARY:Four Way Test Speech Contest
DESCRIPTION:From the earliest days of the organization\, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test\, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales\, production\, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers\, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943\, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: \nOf all the things we think\, say or do: \nIs it the TRUTH?\nIs it FAIR to all concerned?\nWill it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?\nWill it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? \nThe purpose of The 4-Way Speech Contest is: \n\nTo acquaint a large number of young people with Rotary and The 4-Way Test\nTo determine and enhance Rotary’s commitment to our youngsters\nTo heighten awareness of Rotary additionally among parents\, schools\, and community\nTo recognize\, encourage and reward hard work and accomplishments of youngsters

SUMMARY:LVRC Foundation Program - Larry Rouse & Tom Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Paul was born in Springfield\, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was enrolled as a student in the School of Business with a Major in Business Management and a Minor in Labor Relations. Paul obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA) within three years and graduated in the top 5% of his class in May 1978. Before graduation\, he was invited and admitted into Beta Gama Sigma National Honor Society\, which is the highest scholastic honor a student of Business Administration can obtain. Upon graduation\, he was offered interviews at several large business firms and chose to accept an offer to become an employee of Bechtel Corporation’s Western Power Division in Los Angeles\, California in July of 1978. This required him to move from Massachusetts to Southern California. \nAfter working in their Business and Finance Department for one year\, Paul was invited\, interviewed\, offered and accepted becoming the Senior Project Administrative Supervisor of Technology Transfer Operations\, which was a newly formed Department. This opportunity meant Paul became responsible for supervision and training of over 1\,800 foreign national Engineers during a period that lasted for over 10 years when he ultimately became the Manager of Technology Transfer Operations. You see\, Bechtel’s Clients no longer wanted us to just design and build “Turn-key projects for them anymore. \nPaul’s next project assignment was as the Project Controls Manager for the Miami International Airport’s building and completion the new Power Generation Plant. When that project was finished\, Paul next worked on the retrofit and expansion of Chevron’s largest refinery in the world\, which is located on the Southern Gulf Coast in Pascagoula\, Mississippi\, This was a $3.9 billion project that was scheduled to last for at least 3 years to complete\, but the economy went really south on petroleum projects so\, after 30 years of continuous employment with the Bechtel Corporation\, Paul decided to retire early and move back to Las Vegas\, where he still owned a home and soon thereafter rejoined the Las Vegas Rotary Club. \nSo what happened next? Bechtel called and offered him a really great opportunity. What was it? They offered him a newly created position of becoming Manager of Plant Operating Services! This meant not only for Power Plants that Bechtel had already designed and built but very possibly upgrading and retrofitting other non-Bechtel projects throughout the world too. So what did he ultimately decide to do? Why try to relax and enjoy the rest of his most blessed life of course!

SUMMARY:Valedictorian Luncheon - Liam Frink
DESCRIPTION:Executive Director\, UNLV Office of Undergraduate Research \nLiam Frink’s research and scholarship interests include Arctic prehistory and colonial history. His current work has two main trajectories. He conducts ethnoecological field research in western Alaska and works in Yup’ik Eskimo villages where people continue to hunt\, fish\, and gather with many of the same subsistence techniques and tools that would have been used prehistorically. \nHe is particularly interested in how technology has changed as well as the social\, economic\, and health context of these various technologies. A primary goal of his interdisciplinary modern field- and lab-based studies is to better identify archaeological signatures as well as to pique new questions of the past material record. In addition to these studies\, he is interested in the colonial period and the processes of change and persistence among native people. For these studies\, he gathers interview data with elders who have interacted with early colonial institutions and practices as well as conducts archival and museum research.

SUMMARY:PDG Silvia Whitlock
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Whitlock\, Rotary District 5300 Governor in 2012-2013\, was the first woman president in Rotary International. She was born in New York City but was educated\, through high school\, in Kingston\, Jamaica. After returning to New York City she earned a B.A. in Psychology from Hunter College. Sylvia worked for the United Nations\, as a Statistical Clerk\, before moving to California to start a career in Education. In California\, she went on to earn a Masters Degree\, cum laude\, in Education from Cal Poly\, Pomona\, and a Ph.D.\, cum laude\, in Education\, from Claremont Graduate School. She earned another Masters Degree\, in Marriage and Family Therapy\, from Azusa Pacific University\, and began a second career as a therapist. She is licensed by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California. \nIn 1982\, while an Elementary School Principal in Duarte\, California\, she was invited to join the history-making Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte. The club was chartered in District 5300 in 1952. Just before its twenty-fifth birthday in 1976\, the club violated Rotary’s bylaws by inviting women to join\, ultimately causing its charter to be revoked by Rotary International. Undeterred\, the club renamed itself the Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte and its members continued on their quest not to be outcasts of one of the greatest humanitarian organizations in the world. \nSylvia became President of the club in 1987\, the year the United States Supreme Court ruled that the club be reinstated\, thus making her the first woman in the Rotary World to head a club as President. She has served as President twice\, Secretary\, Treasurer\, and Foundation Representative\, and District Governor. She has been a speaker at Rotary Clubs conventions and meetings\, here and overseas\, including South Africa\, Jamaica\, Washington and Texas. \nSylvia considers Rotary to be the best vehicle for humanitarian ventures in service to mankind. Some favorite club projects have included sinking water wells in Nigeria\, setting up an AIDS Center in Jamaica and supporting an orphanage in Mexico. She continues to be inspired by the many Rotarians who have taken the organization to the edge of tomorrow and is committed to using the opportunity she has been given to further the cause of Rotary\, in her community\, in her country\, and in the world. \nSylvia is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and benefactor. She has three adult children – Meredith – a Paul Harris Fellow\, BG is a deputy county counsel in San Mateo County and Arlan. She considers raising her children the most satisfying and enjoyable job she has ever had. Her book\, “Women Also Serve\,” published in 2015 by iUniverse Publishing\, is filled with facts and personal anecdotes and shares a compelling history of the Duarte Rotary Club.
